This course is a comprehensive introduction to relational database management using Microsoft Access. The focus is on application of database tools for data collection, querying and reporting. Students will be expected to become fluent in database concepts such as tables, relationships, queries, filters, sorts, forms, and reports. Students will learn how to create and manage database, query database using SQL language, and import/export data. Additionally, capabilities of data visualization and analysis using PowerPivot (in Microsoft Excel) or Radiant (in RStudio) will be introduced. The format encompasses lecture/demonstration and hands-on assignments. Step-by-step instructions with example data will be supplied. Students will be encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in class to their own data, culminating in homework report.
The overall objective of this course is to introduce students to relational database management and equip them with practical knowledge of SQL query language, reports, and capabilities for further data analysis.
